Famous Traditional Games in Malaysia

Malaysia is one of a country that have variety type of traditional sports and games include indoor as well as outdoor. In the past, these games was played by the man and the woman in their leisure time. Plus, the games can test our mind physically and logically and in the same time can strength their relationship between the residents or friends. Futhermore, the traditional games can be play by other races too. Lets know some of popular traditional games in the Malaysia.



CONGKAK :




·         Congkak is one of a famous traditional indoor games that was played among variety of races in Malaysia nowadays. This games was introduced all over Malay world from the dealers in Malacca and in the past this game was played only for the king and family as one of their entertainment.
·         The name of Congkak comes from malay word “congak” that gives meaning the player have to have a good mental calculation to choose any holes at random that filled with uncountable marbles or seeds to keep playing and get more point.
·         Congkak usually made from hollow wooden board and consists of 16 holes known as “houses” while the holes on the left and the right known as “storehouses”. Each houses are filled with 7 marbles or seeds except for storehouses


     How to play :
1.      2 players required to play Congkak
2.      Each players controls 7 storehouses filled with 7 (marbles or seeds) and 1 storehouses (collect points)
3.      Both players start the game together and the one who stop first when the last marbles enter in the empty storehouses. The players must wait for his/her turn. 
4.   Deposite only one marbles/seeds in each house and continue clockwisely. 

5.      The one have more marbles in the storehouses win the games.






GALAH PANJANG :





·         Galah Panjang is one of famous traditional sports games and normally played by children especially among boys.
·      The purpose and aim of the game is to beat opponents through the billon obtained.
·      The concept Galah panjang to defend and also test the player’s efficiency of speed and  their skills to avoid from being touch by the opponents
·         This game is not an individual game but it is  played in a team/group, minimum players in each group is only 4 people and no any equipment is needed.
·         2 team consists of attackers and defenders and the game is played on a court or on a vacant land.
·         The playing court must have a grid of six rectangles.


HOW TO PLAY :
1.      Sketch or make a grid of six rectangles on the land or court.
2.      Set 2 team consists of defenders and the attackers. Each team must have more than 4 players.
3.      Choose one team leader in each team, the one who will start the game with the opponents leader by shaking hand and supervise the attackers that enter and exit the grid in the first line. The team leaders also free to go to any line.
4.      The other team members have to guard the other attackers that success enter the first line.
5.      The attackers that have been touched by the defenders considered as dead.
6.      In order to win the game, the attackers team at least one players should pass the last line and return back to the first line without being touched or tapped from the defender team.




 GASING :  





·         In the old days, Gasing is one of a popular game in the peninsular of Malaysia especially in the Kelantan and Melaka and typically played by men.
·         This game will be play after the harvest season because the community of the villagers believe that the spinning top can give them a good quality of harvest. The villagers will challenge themselves based on their skills to fling the top spinning (gasing) and make the top spinning to stand for a long time.
·         Top spinning made from ironwood because of the hardness.Plus, it comes with variety of type and shape with a unique design depends on the creativity of the craftsmanship.
·         Most of the children usually play the top spinning with a smaller size than the adults used.


HOW TO PLAY:
1.      There are two ways to play the top spinning, Spinning Contest and Striking Match
2.      Choose a hard surface to play the top spinning
3.      Coil the string on the top spinning neck tightly, the length of the string is quite important because the longer the string, the longer time of the top spinning will be spin.
4.      Next, put your middle finger into the grip hole and fling the top spinning with the fullest of energy by raise the hand backward.
5.      The top spinning that spin with longest time and does not stop when it was hit are considered win the game.





As conclusion, the traditional games should not be neglected and we as a Malaysian should be proud because we have our own unique games that show a good identity of our country towards the tourist. The traditional games are better for every age of people that gives a relaxation and happiness to fresh our mind.
